Rijeka & Opatija

Visit the capital of the Kvarner region with a guided tour and visit to the National Theatre before our guided tour of Opatija.

City tour of Rijeka including visit to the National Theatre
Guided tour of Opatija

Rijeka

Rijeka, the vibrant capital of the Kvarner region, proudly held the title of European Capital of Culture 2020 thanks to its rich heritage and remarkable blend of influences from past rulers, including the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy, Germany and Yugoslavia.

On a guided walk through this lively city, you’ll discover architectural gems such as St. Vitus Cathedral, the Leaning Tower, and the Turkish House, each telling its own story of Rijeka’s layered past.
The highlight of your tour is a visit to the National Theatre, where a guided experience reveals the building’s stunning architecture and fascinating history. Named after Ivan Zajc—a celebrated composer and conductor born in Rijeka—the theatre was transformed in 1883 when the city commissioned renowned architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner Jr. of the prestigious Fellner & Helmer firm to renovate the original structure.

Opatija

Your journey continues to Opatija, affectionately known as the Queen of the Adriatic. Here, you’ll uncover the captivating story of Croatia’s first seaside resort. Stroll through lush parks adorned with colourful camellias, admire the town’s first hotel, and take in sweeping views from the famous 12-kilometre promenade that stretches along the entire Opatija Riviera.

Dinner tonight is at our hotel.

Krk Island

Travel to Krk Island for a guided tour and a tasting at a local winery in Vrbnik.

Guided tour of Krk
Free time in Krk
Wine tasting at a winery with local cheese and prosciutto

Over 1,000 islands punctuate the Adriatic off the coast of Croatia and, today, we'll visit one of the largest. Located in the Bay of Kvarner, Krk - named "the Golden Island" during ancient times - offers an abundance of natural and cultural beauty.

Krk Island is connected to the mainland by a 1,430-metre-long bridge, which we'll cross on our journey. From the comfort of the coach, you'll be treated to glittering views of the sea and rocky limestone coastline covered in patches of sub-mediterranean foliage and pine forests. Our first stop is the island's eponymous walled town, where we'll enjoy a guided tour.

As one of the oldest towns in the Adriatic, Krk has been inhabited for more than 2,000 years - that pre-dates the arrival of the Romans! As we wander the narrow streets, our guide will bring to life the maze of ancient buildings we see, such as the 5th-century Krk Cathedral, which is part of a larger complex of church buildings featuring different architectural styles. Another highlight is the 12th-century castle by the sea. Built by the Frankopan family, one of Croatia’s leading aristocratic families, it offers wonderful views over the bay - and an atmospheric, open-air venue for summer concerts.

Free time in Krk

After our guided tour, there'll be free time for you to continue to explore or try the local cuisine. Here you'll find a perfect example of the Mediterranean diet - healthy foods made with fresh ingredients, from homemade olive oils and locally grown herbs to freshly caught fish - perhaps this is the reason the people of Krk Island live longer than their mainland counterparts!

Vrbnik

Later this afternoon, we'll drive across the island to Vrbinik, a pretty village set on a rocky hill overlooking the sea.

Known to Croatians as the home of many stone inscriptions, missals, codices, registers and legal manuscripts written in Glagolitic - the oldest known Slavic alphabet - elsewhere, it's more well-known for its dry white wine, Žlahtina. We'll stop at a local winery to taste the golden-hued wine, paired with delicious homemade cheese and prosciutto, before heading back to the hotel.

Day
4

Island of Rab

Take the ferry across to the Island of Rab for a guided tour, followed by a visit to a bakery for a tasting of local pastries.

Guided tour of Rab
Visit to a bakery with tasting of local pastries

Island of Rab

Travel along the dazzling coastline to Stinica harbour, where a short 30-minute ferry ride carries you across the sparkling waters to the enchanting island of Rab. As you explore the island, you’ll be captivated by its contrasting landscapes - from the stark, lunar-like terrain in the north to the lush, forested hills and green valleys at its heart.

Step into the charm of Rab’s old town, dominated by its four elegant bell towers. Strolling along the three historic streets, which once divided the town’s social classes, you’ll encounter grand stone palaces, ancient churches, peaceful monasteries and colourful parks. Our guide will share fascinating stories, including the visit of King Edward VIII and how it transformed Rab into a celebrated destination for travellers.

Bakery visit with pastry tasting

No visit to Rab would be complete without tasting its famous Rab Torta, a delicacy with a history spanning more than 300 years. Originally created during Venetian rule for the noble families of Rab, this exquisite cake later became a cherished treat for baptisms, communions and saints’ days. Traditionally round or baked in slender sticks, Rab Torta is a masterpiece of delicate pastry and fragrant filling. Today, thanks to the dedication of Mrs Vilma, who learned the secrets from Rab’s grandmothers, you’ll witness the art of crafting this culinary treasure and enjoy a tasting experience that celebrates the island’s rich traditions.

Our visit concludes with a delightful array of local flavours, including Rab Torta, Mediterranean cookies infused with lavender, orange and rosemary, homemade jams, fig cake, caramelised almonds and a glass of dessert wine, accompanied by refreshing drinks. This is more than a tasting - it’s a journey into the heart of Rab’s heritage.

Later, we return to the hotel and enjoy an included dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Istrian coast & Rovinj

Spend time uncovering Istria's most picturesque fishing harbour, Rovinj.

Visit Rovinj
Speciality truffle dinner

From the early 13th century to the late 18th century, Istrian coastal towns came under Venetian rule, and today we'll visit one of the most intriguing, Rovinj, known as Istria’s most picturesque fishing harbour. Set on an oval Peninsula, the charming old town has managed to preserve its character. During free time to explore as you wish, you'll really feel like you've stepped back in time as you lose yourself in the medieval lanes and cobbled piazzas. Over the terracotta-coloured rooftops, you'll spot the town's hilltop church modelled on the campanile of St Mark's in Venice - a legacy from the Venetians. And you'll find even more evidence of its past rulers in the colourful buildings by the water's edge.

Leaving Rovinj you'll head to a country restaurant in Bani where a local delicacy of truffles awaits. The truffles of Istria are highly desirable due to their scarcity; needing specially trained hounds to sniff out this particular part of the peninsula's culinary treasure. Just a scant sprinkling of their shavings easily turns any meal into gourmet experience that rivals any of her Italian neighbours.

Boat ride to Plitviče Lakes

Stay at Bluesun Hotel Jadran

Today, be prepared to be mesmerised by the beautiful lakes and waterfalls of the Republic of Croatia's oldest and largest national park, Plitviče Lakes.

Located in the mountainous region of Lika, halfway between Zagreb and Zadar, the park is home to a series of around 90 waterfalls that connect 16 turquoise-coloured lakes. The highest waterfall, Veliki Slap - or Great Waterfall - stands 78 metres high but Sastavci Slap is considered the most beautiful waterfall in the park, situated in serene surroundings near Novakovića Lake. Rumour has it, it's affectionately named after a local man who was always seen crossing the lake in his boat.

From here, we’ll set off on a relaxing boat ride across shimmering waters, offering  awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. If you’d prefer not to walk down to the boat, you can hop aboard what is known as the panoramic land train, which is designed for sightseeing.

Tonight, gather in the hotel's restaurant to savour another delicious included dinner.

Guided walking tour of Split

Trogir

Today’s journey takes us to two jewels of Dalmatia: Trogir and Split.
We begin in Trogir, a city steeped in history and charm. Accompanied by our expert local guide, you’ll uncover the secrets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised since 1997 for its exceptional urban continuity. Trogir is considered the finest example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture on the Adriatic—and indeed, in all of Eastern Europe. Within its medieval centre, enclosed by ancient walls, you’ll find a beautifully preserved castle, a tower, around ten churches, and an array of palaces and residences showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

Lunch in Stella Croatica

After exploring Trogir, we head to the surrounding hills to visit Stella Croatica, where tradition meets innovation. This unique destination tells the story of the Dabelić family, whose roots trace back to the mid-20th century on the island of Mljet, where they cultivated olives, figs and grapes to produce oil, wine and traditional delicacies. Melita, the youngest daughter, founded Stella Croatica to preserve Dalmatian culinary heritage, collecting old dessert recipes and giving them a modern twist. A highlight of your visit is the Olive Tree Museum, celebrating one of Dalmatia’s most iconic cultural symbols. Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and immerse yourself in the flavours and traditions of the region.

Split

In the early afternoon, we continue to Split, the ancient city built around Emperor Diocletian’s Palace. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Split’s old town occupies the southern coast of the peninsula, with about half of its historic core formed by the palace itself. Within these walls lies the Cathedral of St. Domnius (Sveti Duje), originally the emperor’s mausoleum. Along the waterfront, the lively Riva promenade stretches beside the harbour bay, offering stunning views and a vibrant atmosphere—one of Split’s most iconic landmarks.

After soaking up the history and beauty of Split, we enjoy a scenic drive along the coast to our hotel.

Day
9

Mostar

Visit Mostar town in the neighbouring country Bosna and Hercegovina.

Guided Tour of Mostar
Traditional lunch

Today’s journey takes us across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina to visit the captivating city of Mostar, renowned for its unique blend of cultures and religions. This historic city offers a fascinating tapestry of architectural styles and traditions, shaped by centuries of diverse influences. At its heart stands the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge)—a symbol of resilience, rebuilt after its destruction during the Balkan wars. As you explore, you’ll encounter elegant mosques, vibrant bazaars and charming streets that reflect the spirit of this remarkable destination.

With your local guide, you’ll uncover the highlights of Mostar and learn about its heritage. During the scenic journey from Tučepi and back, your guide will point out key landmarks and share insights into the surrounding area.

After the city tour, indulge in a traditional lunch featuring local specialities: savoury cheese and spinach pie, a selection of grilled meats, fresh salad and a delicious dessert—a true taste of Bosnian hospitality.

This evening, enjoy an included dinner at the hotel.

We then enjoy a two hour cruise to Hvar with time to relax and take in the coastal views. A welcome drink is served as our guide introduces island life.

Our first stop is Vrboska on Hvar, where you’ll have an hour to look around or join a short guided walk.

Next, we sail to Brač, where lunch is served on board: freshly grilled fish, traditional bread, salad, and wine or water, a taste of Dalmatian cuisine.

Bol

After lunch, we arrive in Bol, famous for its iconic beach Zlatni Rat, whose unique shape shifts with the sea currents. Known as a surfer’s paradise, Bol offers time to relax - whether you fancy a coffee in one of its inviting cafés or a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters.
